Nigerian activist and online commentator, Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has been released on bail following his detention by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
His release was confirmed on Wednesday by his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, who stated, “VDM released to us on bail.”
He extended appreciation to fellow activists, legal partners, and public figures who advocated for Otse’s release.
Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore also announced the development on X, saying, “Thanks to unrelenting efforts… he is with his ebullient lawyer.”
Adeyanju, who had earlier criticised delays in formalising the bail, described the initial process as “social media bail,” due to the EFCC’s failure to issue written documentation despite confirming bail had been granted.
The EFCC had previously stated that Otse was detained after ignoring multiple invitations regarding “several petitions bordering on alleged financial crimes.”
Although Otse is now free, the commission has not released detailed charges or disclosed if further action will follow.
