For the first time, the Ballon d’Or ceremony will offer an equal number of awards to male and female footballers, organisers announced on Monday.
Set for September 22 at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, the event will now feature six categories each for men and women, including newly introduced honours for best women’s goalkeeper, top young female player, and highest-scoring woman in club or national competitions.
An additional Socrates Award, recognising humanitarian efforts, remains open to all genders.
Nominees will be revealed in early August.
