The Federal Government has ordered the urgent removal of unauthorised structures beneath the Iddo Bridge in Lagos, citing threats to public safety and the bridge’s structural integrity.

Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, gave the directive on Sunday during an inspection alongside engineers and officials from Julius Berger Nigeria Plc. He said illegal occupation, including shops, warehouses, and makeshift homes, has caused extensive damage, prompting a recommendation for complete demolition and reconstruction of the bridge.

“The bridge has been compromised by fires and repeated vehicle collisions. It must be rebuilt,” Umahi stated.

He criticised those resisting evacuation, saying lives are at risk. The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos was instructed to clear the area before Monday ends, while security personnel were directed to protect any valuables found during the demolition.

The Iddo Bridge, awarded for rehabilitation in 2024, has also faced issues of low clearance, making it prone to damage by heavy-duty trucks.

“This is not about punishing anyone. It’s about preventing disaster,” Umahi added.
