The Lagos State Government has begun full enforcement of its ban on single-use plastics under 40 microns, effective July 1, 2025, targeting items like Styrofoam packs, plastic straws, thin nylon bags, and disposable cutlery.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed that shops or markets caught with these materials will be sealed, with offenders prosecuted under environmental laws.
“The grace period is over. Enforcement starts now, and there will be no exemptions,” Wahab said.
He clarified that the ban is limited to specific non-biodegradable items and does not affect all plastics. While their use is prohibited in Lagos, transporting them to other states remains permitted.
Dismissing concerns over job losses, Wahab said the shift to eco-friendly alternatives would create more opportunities.
