In a nationwide gesture of respect, the Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away over the weekend in London.

The announcement, made on Monday by Minister of Interior Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, follows President Bola Tinubu’s directive to observe a seven-day period of national mourning. This decision allows citizens time to reflect on the life and service of the late president, who led the country from 2015 to 2023.

“This holiday is a moment for Nigerians to honour the legacy of President Buhari, a man known for his discipline, patriotism, and dedication to Nigeria’s unity,” the minister stated in an official release.

As part of the mourning protocol, national flags will continue to fly at half-mast until Saturday, July 19. The Federal Government also urged citizens to use the day to promote peace and national unity in remembrance of the late statesman’s vision for the country.

Buhari died at the age of 82 and will be laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday afternoon. His remains are expected to arrive in Nigeria earlier that day.
