The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has issued a final warning to the Federal Government, stating that a nationwide shutdown of medical services is imminent if ongoing disputes are not resolved by July 23.

Speaking over the weekend, NMA President Prof. Bala Audu said the association is prepared to take action over what it describes as government insensitivity to the welfare of doctors and the integrity of the health system.

The current standoff stems from a controversial circular issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, which revised allowances for medical and dental officers. The NMA has rejected the directive, saying it undermines prior agreements and was issued without proper consultation.

“Our position is clear, if there’s no resolution by the deadline, we may be left with no choice but to withdraw our services,” Prof. Audu warned.

He added that talks between the association and government officials had been ongoing, but recent events, including the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, delayed further dialogue. Another meeting is expected to take place in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the NMA’s Katsina State chapter echoed the national body’s stance, calling for immediate withdrawal of the circular and warning of disruptions if their concerns are not addressed.
