The Nigerian Senate has entered its annual recess, suspending plenary sessions until September 23, 2025. But while the chamber takes a break, lawmakers are expected to stay active in their core legislative responsibilities.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio emphasised that the break is not a holiday from duty. He said senators must continue field work, including oversight visits to critical institutions and infrastructure projects.

“You are moving from plenary for the next few weeks, but you are not stopping your legislative functions,” Akpabio told lawmakers before adjournment. “That’s what your people elected you to do.”

Committee activities, especially those involving prisons, diaspora affairs, and internal matters, are expected to remain in motion during the recess. The goal, Akpabio noted, is to return with detailed reports that can inform future plenary debates.

The recess is part of the legislature’s regular calendar and mirrors the break already observed by the House of Representatives.
