Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery has moved to calm fears about possible fuel shortages despite an ongoing strike by fuel tanker drivers. The refinery authorities have stated that they have sufficient stock and distribution plans to ensure continuous supply across the country .
The strike action, which began earlier this week, involves members of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) who are protesting working conditions and compensation. However, Dangote Refinery officials emphasized that their operations remain unaffected and that they are working with alternative transport arrangements to maintain fuel distribution.
In a statement, the refinery’s management said: “We wish to reassure the general public that there is no cause for alarm regarding petroleum products supply. We have adequate inventory and have implemented contingency measures to ensure uninterrupted supply to all parts of the country” .
The 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery, which began operations recently, represents a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to achieve self-sufficiency in petroleum refining. Before its commissioning, Nigeria relied heavily on imported refined petroleum products despite being Africa’s largest oil producer.
Industry analysts note that the refinery’s ability to maintain supply during the strike demonstrates Nigeria’s growing resilience in the energy sector. This development comes alongside reports from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) that pipeline theft has been nearly eliminated through coordinated efforts with security agencies .
The strike continues in other parts of the petroleum distribution chain, but Dangote Refinery’s assurance has helped stabilize market sentiments. Motorists and businesses are being urged to avoid panic buying as the situation remains under control.
Energy experts suggest that Nigeria’s petroleum sector is showing signs of increased stability thanks to recent investments in domestic refining capacity and improved security around energy infrastructure .
