The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced plans to begin a two-week nationwide warning strike from Monday, October 13, 2025, over what it described as the Federal Government’s neglect of key agreements and welfare issues.
ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, confirmed the development in a memo to all branches, stating that the decision followed an unfulfilled 14-day ultimatum earlier given to the government.
He explained that despite repeated appeals, the government has yet to implement the renegotiated 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement and other pending commitments.
“Our union has waited patiently for the government to act on the negotiated agreement since February 2025,” Piwuna said. “Unfortunately, there has been no meaningful progress, forcing us to begin a two-week warning strike to push for action.”
He urged members to remain united and take directives only from branch chairpersons, emphasising that the union’s goal is to compel the government to improve lecturers’ welfare and strengthen the university system.
The Federal Ministry of Education, when contacted, said updates on the matter would be provided “when available.”
Meanwhile, the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) has also issued a 14-day ultimatum to the government, citing similar grievances, including unpaid allowances and delayed negotiations on its 2009 agreement.
NAAT President, Ibeji Nwokoma, warned that failure to meet their demands within the given period could lead to another round of industrial action.
Both unions insist that the government has the capacity to resolve the issues and prevent another disruption in the university calendar.

I wasn’t sure what to expect at first, but this turned out to be surprisingly useful. Thanks for taking the time to put this together.
