The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a temporary suspension of the enforcement of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991, to allow for further review and stakeholder engagement.
Force spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, who disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, said the decision followed a recent meeting between the police leadership and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) led by its President, Afam Osigwe (SAN).
He explained that while no court order currently restrains enforcement, the police considered it appropriate to pause operations in the public interest and in recognition of the NBA’s ongoing legal process.
Hundeyin said a joint Police–NBA committee had been set up to review issues surrounding tinted glass regulation and foster mutual understanding between both institutions.
Motorists were urged to use the window of suspension to regularise their documents and ensure compliance with vehicle registration laws.
Meanwhile, legal stakeholders have welcomed the development, describing it as a step toward ensuring fairness and public confidence in law enforcement.
The Inspector-General reaffirmed the police’s commitment to transparent and citizen-friendly policing while maintaining collaboration with legal and civil society partners.
