Reps Order Probe into $18bn Refinery Rehabilitation

The House of Representatives has ordered an investigation into why Nigeria’s refineries in Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna remain non-functional despite about $18 billion spent on repairs over the past two decades.

The motion, raised by Hon. Oluwaseun Whingan during Thursday’s plenary, expressed concern over the continuous spending on refineries that have failed to produce results.

Whingan said Nigerians deserve to know how public funds were used, especially after industry figures like Aliko Dangote and Olusegun Obasanjo questioned the viability of the plants.

The House directed its committees on Petroleum Resources, Gas, and Public Assets to review all funds allocated for refinery rehabilitation between 2010 and 2024, and to report back within four weeks.

“It’s time to know where the money went and why our refineries remain idle,” Whingan stated.
