Afrobeat Artist Crayon Grieves Loss of His Mother

A popular Nigerian musician known as Crayon has shared the heartbreaking news of his mother’s passing. Charles Chukwu, the stage name of the singer signed to Mavins Records, revealed that his mum, Evelyn Chukwu, died on 4 July. He broke the sad update in a touching message on his X account, formerly Twitter, late on Thursday.

In his heartfelt words, Crayon described his mother as his greatest support, his strength, and his guiding light. He called the day she left him the most painful he has ever known.

Just a few days earlier, they had spoken on the phone. As always at the beginning of a new month, she had offered a prayer for his well-being. She seemed full of life, with no hint of trouble. Then, everything fell apart in an instant, he explained.

The image of her lying still in the hospital bed haunts him still. It shattered his heart completely and brought his worst nightmare to life.

Crayon wondered aloud about the cruel twist of fate. Why now, so close to his own birthday? After years of hardship, the family had finally seen better days. In a blend of English and Pidgin, he poured out his sorrow: “After all the hardships we’ve endured for so many years, just when blessings have started to come our way, you leave me behind? What was the point of it all?”

He praised her as a true fighter who had shouldered the weight of the household for so long and always found a way to keep going.

Even in his deep sadness, Crayon vowed to stay resilient. He plans to look after his loved ones and keep moving ahead, just as she would have wished. “I won’t say farewell because I feel you living on inside me, and you’re forever by my side. Thank you for all you’ve given me, my lovely mum. Until we see each other again, my guardian angel,” he ended.

Funeral rites for Mrs Chukwu have already taken place.

Crayon, whose full name is Charles Chukwu, has made a name for himself in the Afrobeat scene after joining the roster at Mavins Records.
