On February 9, 2024, a tragic helicopter crash near the Mojave Desert in California claimed the lives of six individuals, including Access Bank’s CEO, Herbert Wigwe, his wife, Doreen, and their 29-year-old son, Chizi.
The accident also took the lives of former Nigerian Exchange Group Plc Chairman, Abimbola Ogunbanjo, and two crew members.
One year later, on February 9, 2025, Access Bank honoured the memory of the Wigwe family with a heartfelt tribute.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the bank reflected on their enduring legacy:
“Today marks one year since the world stood still for us. On this day, we lost Herbert, Doreen, and Chizi—three remarkable souls who left an indelible mark on our lives and our hearts. One year later, we still feel the void, but we also feel the weight of their legacy—one that challenges us to be better, do better, and strive for greatness. As we reflect, we carry forward the values they instilled and honor their memories by walking the path they paved for us. Forever in our hearts.”
A memorial service was held at Eko Hotel in Lagos, Nigeria, attended by family, friends, and colleagues to commemorate the lives and contributions of the Wigwe family.
Herbert Wigwe was widely recognised as a transformative leader in Nigeria’s banking sector, steering Access Bank to significant growth and innovation. His leadership and vision left a lasting impact on the institution and the broader financial community.
The loss of the Wigwe family continues to be deeply felt, but their legacy of excellence, resilience, and dedication to positive change remains a guiding light for many.
