The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has questioned Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo in connection with viral videos showing guests spraying naira and foreign currencies at her daughter’s wedding.

Ojo confirmed in an Instagram post that she honoured the EFCC’s invitation on May 5, after returning from the UK. According to her, officials confronted her with clips from the ceremony and questioned her about the legality of the money-spraying incidents.

“They asked if I knew spraying money was an offence,” she wrote. “I honestly thought only damaging the naira was illegal.”

She said EFCC officers clarified that “spraying any currency on individuals is prohibited,” adding that she was “surprised” to learn the law applied to both local and foreign notes.

The actress was released the same day and said her lawyer would represent her should further inquiries be necessary. She used the opportunity to warn the public: “I strongly advise against spraying money at events. Let’s avoid unnecessary issues with the law.”

Meanwhile, the agency has reiterated that spraying or mishandling naira violates financial regulations and is prosecutable under the Central Bank Act.
