The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised concerns over what it calls a growing attempt by the Federal Government to suppress opposition voices under the guise of national security.
The party was reacting to a recent statement by presidential adviser Bayo Onanuga, who claimed that unnamed politicians were plotting to overthrow the Tinubu administration. The ADC described the remark as reckless and politically motivated, warning that such claims could justify an anti-democratic clampdown.
ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi said the party remains committed to lawful political engagement, not subversion, and criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for being increasingly intolerant of criticism.
He urged President Tinubu to caution his aides against inflammatory rhetoric, especially as the country moves closer to the 2027 elections.
The party also called on international bodies to monitor Nigeria’s political space and hold the government accountable for actions that may undermine democratic freedoms.
