AFCON Qualifier: Rwanda Stuns Nigeria but Misses Out on Qualification.

Rwanda defeated Nigeria 2-1 in an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on Monday, delivering a spirited performance despite already missing out on qualification.

Samuel Chukwueze gave Nigeria the lead in the 59th minute with a stunning solo effort.

However, the Amavubi responded with two quick goals, securing a historic victory over the Super Eagles in front of a Nigerian home crowd.

Although Rwanda’s win was commendable, Benin Republic clinched the group’s second AFCON ticket, leaving the Rwandans out of the 2025 tournament.

Nigeria, already qualified after Libya’s earlier victory over Rwanda, fielded a weakened squad under interim coach Austine Eguavoen.

Key players such as Ademola Lookman, Ola Aina, and Stanley Nwabali were absent, while Victor Osimhen was benched. Maduka Okoye was handed a start in goal.

The Super Eagles will now shift focus to their preparations for the 2025 AFCON competition.
