Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, will honour the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Sharif Al-Hussain, with honorary degrees at its 44th Convocation Ceremony on 25 January 2025.
This decision was endorsed by the university’s Honorary Degrees Committee during its 544th (Special) Senate meeting on 7 January 2025 and approved by the Governing Council on 8 January 2025.
Dr Okonjo-Iweala, a globally acclaimed economist and finance expert, will receive a Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa).
With over 40 years of experience, she has served twice as Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and became the first woman and African to lead the WTO in March 2021.
Sheikh Sharif Al-Hussain will be conferred with a Doctor of Laws (LL.D) Honoris Causa. Born in Borno State, Al-Hussain has authored over 500 works on Qur’anic studies, philosophy, and jurisprudence, blending traditional Islamic scholarship with modern academic practices.
Both recipients have accepted the awards in recognition of their remarkable contributions to global finance and Islamic scholarship.
