Senate President Godswill Akpabio says the newly approved tax reform bills are meant to strengthen Nigeria’s economy, not serve political interests.
He said the National Assembly put national interest first while working on the bills, which are key to President Bola Tinubu’s economic reform plans.
“These bills are foundational to the president’s economic reforms,” Akpabio said in a statement by his media aide, Eseme Eyiboh. “They aim to strengthen revenue generation and create a fairer, more efficient tax system.”
He explained that despite opposition from some lawmakers and governors, the National Assembly passed the bills after adjustments were made to ensure fairness.
The bills are part of President Tinubu’s economic plan to improve tax collection and revenue. Akpabio said they were carefully debated and are now ready for the president’s approval.
He credited the cooperation of lawmakers, governors, and other stakeholders for helping to move the reforms forward.
“Their eventual cooperation was a game changer,” he said.
The bills now await President Tinubu’s signature to become law.
