Amnesty International Faults Charges Against Sowore

Amnesty International has condemned what it calls the “relentless harassment” of Omoyele Sowore, activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters.

The rights group, in a statement on Wednesday, said the terrorism and money laundering charges against him are politically motivated attempts to silence dissent.

“Authorities must immediately drop all the charges against him and end the politically motivated investigation,” the organisation said.

Amnesty noted that targeting Sowore and his media outlet is part of a wider crackdown on free expression in Nigeria. It added that Sowore, recognised as a Prisoner of Conscience since 2019, has faced repeated arrests and violations of his rights for peaceful activism.
