ASUU Suspends Two-Week Strike After Government Intervention

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its two-week warning strike, which began on October 13, 2025, following fresh commitments from the Federal Government and the National Assembly to meet its demands.

ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, announced the suspension on Wednesday during a press briefing in Abuja. He said the decision came after productive meetings with the Yayale Ahmed-led committee and the Deputy Senate President.

“NEC resolved that a one-month window should be given to the government to conclude the ongoing renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement and address other outstanding issues,” Piwuna said.
“We hope the government will use this opportunity to resolve all matters to ensure peace and stability in our universities.”

The Federal Government had earlier criticised the strike, insisting that it was already addressing ASUU’s concerns. It also directed universities to apply the “No Work, No Pay” policy and submit attendance reports for lecturers during the strike period.

Meanwhile, the Senate has waded into the crisis, expressing concern over the government’s failure to meet ASUU’s demands. The Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund, chaired by Senator Aliyu Dandutse, said it had begun moves to initiate a permanent negotiation involving ASUU, the Ministry of Education, and the National Universities Commission.
