ASUU Threatens Strike Over Government Neglect

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned that public universities could soon be hit by another strike unless the Federal Government addresses long-standing grievances.

In a statement signed by its National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, the union criticised what it called the government’s “flip-flop” attitude towards agreements, especially the 2009 FGN-ASUU deal, which it says has been pending renegotiation for over a decade.

“Lecturers in Nigerian universities teach on empty stomachs, conduct research in poorly equipped libraries and labs, and struggle to meet basic living costs,” the statement read. “Yet, government officials are quick to blame universities for producing ‘unemployable graduates’.”

ASUU accused successive governments of disregarding collective bargaining agreements and implementing only selected parts of negotiated terms, leading to widespread distrust.

The union also condemned political interference in appointing Vice Chancellors, warning that universities are being “turned into commodities for politicians and contractors.”

Citing worsening morale among academics, ASUU urged the Federal and State Governments to act swiftly.

“Nigerian academics are tired of excuses,” Piwuna said. “If these issues are not resolved, another industrial crisis is inevitable.”
