A senior British diplomat, Simon Field, has visited world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua in hospital after a fatal road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
The Ogun State Government said the British High Commission has been officially informed of the crash and is closely monitoring the situation. Field met Joshua during the visit and also held discussions with Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The accident happened around midday on Monday and involved a Toyota Lexus vehicle carrying Joshua and three others. Two passengers died in the crash. They were identified as Ayodele Kelvin Olu, a 36 year old Nigerian British citizen, and Gami Sina, a 36 year old British citizen.
Governor Abiodun said he went to the Lagos hospital immediately after receiving news of the accident and stayed there with Sanwo-Olu to supervise Joshua’s treatment.
“As soon as I was informed, I headed straight to the hospital and we remained there to oversee his care,” Abiodun said.
The state government said Joshua is in a stable condition and receiving proper medical attention.
President Bola Tinubu was briefed on the incident and spoke with Joshua and his mother, offering condolences.
“This is a very difficult moment. We must stand united and encourage one another,” the President said.
Authorities have ordered a full investigation into the accident, while the Ogun State Government said updates would be shared as necessary.
