The Central Bank of Nigeria has restated its dedication to supplying clean currency notes in appropriate denominations. The pledge was delivered by the apex bank’s Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Mrs. Hakama Ali, during the CBN Special Day at the 20th Abuja International Trade Fair.
Mrs. Ali encouraged all citizens to become ambassadors for the Naira, emphasising that the central bank cannot achieve this goal alone. She specifically urged the public to respect the currency by refraining from spraying, hawking, mutilating, or counterfeiting the banknotes. This initiative is part of the bank’s broader “Clean Note Policy,” designed to maintain the quality and public confidence in the national currency.
The policy outlines that it is against the law to abuse the Naira through actions such as writing on it, stapling it, or soiling it. Such improper handling leads to increased currency management costs and poses a potential health hazard. The CBN aims to ensure that banknotes in circulation are in good condition, which allows for efficient processing and free acceptance by the general public.
