Wema Bank has appointed 12-year-old Chiderije Mbah as its one-day CEO as part of its Children’s Day initiative to promote leadership and financial literacy among Nigerian youth.
Mbah earned the role through a competitive video pitch contest that drew entries from across the country. His submission stood out for its clarity and leadership vision, securing him a day in charge at the bank’s headquarters in Lagos.
During his brief tenure, Mbah participated in high-level meetings and announced four new incentives to encourage banking habits among children and teenagers. These include free personalized debit cards for teens, ₦2,000 cashback on new children’s accounts, an extra 1% interest on youth savings, and free data for users of Wema’s ALAT Xplore app, all valid from May 27 to June 30.
Wema Bank MD/CEO Moruf Oseni commended Mbah’s performance and pledged his salary for the day to reward the young CEO’s efforts, reinforcing the bank’s commitment to early empowerment.
The initiative aligns with Wema Bank’s broader youth-focused strategy, which includes dedicated banking products like the Royal Kiddies Account and ALAT Xplore for young Nigerians.
