The court appearance of Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, a suspended senator from Kogi Central, was postponed on Tuesday due to an ongoing strike by judicial staff across Nigeria.
The lawmaker was expected to appear before a Federal Capital Territory High Court over allegations of defamation tied to public comments she made about two prominent political figures.
The case, filed by the Federal Government, stems from statements reportedly made in both a televised interview and a private call, in which she implicated a former state governor and a top-ranking federal lawmaker in alleged criminal plots.
Legal sources confirmed that Akpoti-Uduaghan had been served and was prepared to appear in court prior to the industrial action, which shut down most courts nationwide. The case invokes sections of the Penal Code relating to harm to reputation.
The judiciary union has since called off the strike, and a fresh court date is expected to be announced.
