After weeks of tension, Deeper Life Bible Church and the Surulere Local Government are now discussing ways to resolve the dispute over the demolition of the church’s branch at Lawanson, Lagos.
The church claims the building was brought down earlier this year despite an ongoing court case and a restraining order. To make matters worse, construction reportedly began on a shopping complex at the site just days after the demolition.
In a peace meeting held during the week, facilitated by the police, church leaders, Surulere LG Chairman Sulaimon Bamidele, and officials from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) came together to find a way forward.
Church representatives said they’re not looking for conflict, only justice. They’ve asked for a new place of worship within the community and demanded that all construction work stop until the matter is settled.
“Our people have worshipped here for 18 years,” said the church’s lawyer, Taiwo Kupolati (SAN). “We just want a peaceful solution that respects our right to worship.”
The local government is expected to respond with options in the coming week. For now, all building activities on the disputed land are on hold.
