The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), following multiple petitions alleging financial misconduct.
Confirming the development via its official channels, the EFCC stated that Otse had ignored repeated invitations regarding the complaints. “He refused to show up in spite of several invitations sent to him through his known addresses and medium of communication,” the Commission said. It added that a remand order was obtained and that VDM has now been granted administrative bail, pending the fulfillment of conditions.
Amid criticism that the arrest was politically motivated, the EFCC clarified that the detention was based strictly on alleged financial infractions, not past criticism of the agency. “His arrest was not informed by such attacks,” it said, urging the public to “allow the Commission to do its job without fear or favour.”
Protests erupted in Abuja on Monday, with demonstrators demanding VDM’s release and questioning the manner of his arrest. The protestors carried placards that read “Activism is not a crime” and “Release VeryDarkMan,” and accused state institutions of targeting outspoken critics.
Political figures have also weighed in. Former vice president Atiku Abubakar called the arrest “another blatant abuse of power,” while Peter Obi condemned the nature of the detention, likening it to an abduction. “This disturbing method… risks being mimicked by criminal elements,” Obi warned.
Popular musician Davido also expressed support, writing: “The support I’m seeing for VDM everywhere is encouraging… FREE MY GUY.”
EFCC says charges will be filed once investigations are concluded.
