EFCC Receives Voluntary Confession from Young Cybercrime Suspect in Benin

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it is witnessing a shift in attitudes among Nigerian youths, following the voluntary surrender of a 28-year-old suspected internet fraudster in Benin, Edo State.

According to a statement by the Commission, the individual, whose name was not disclosed, walked into the Benin zonal office earlier this week to confess his involvement in online romance scams. He reportedly impersonated foreign nationals and built fake love connections with unsuspecting victims abroad, using translation apps to sustain the deception.

The suspect, a native of Oredo Local Government Area in Edo, told investigators that his decision to come clean was driven by a desire to break free from the fraudulent lifestyle.

“I want to stop and live a better life,” he was quoted as saying.

Describing the move as both rare and courageous, the EFCC praised the suspect’s willingness to cooperate and viewed the action as a reflection of growing public awareness about the long-term consequences of cybercrime. The agency also used the opportunity to urge others involved in fraudulent activities to reflect on their choices and seek rehabilitation.

While the suspect remains in custody for profiling, the Commission has assured that due process will be followed in line with its operational procedures. The EFCC added that his action offers hope for reform and self-accountability among Nigeria’s digital generation.
