Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai registered as a member of the African Democratic Congress in Unguwar Sarki Ward, Kaduna State, on Tuesday. He collected his membership card, numbered 000002, after quitting the All Progressives Congress in March over clashes with its leadership. El-Rufai joined alongside supporters, including ex-appointees and local government heads, at the party office.
El-Rufai declared himself a full-fledged ADC member ready to fight poor governance. He praised the party for accepting coalition terms that the Social Democratic Party rejected due to alleged government bribes. The ex-governor urged all Kaduna residents aged 18 and above to sign up en masse.
He promised to repeat the 2015 sweep that ended the Peoples Democratic Party’s rule in the state. El-Rufai accused the current APC administration of breaking pledges and acting without restraint. “We helped put them in office, so we must help send them back before they face jail,” he told cheering crowds and officials like ADC Vice Chairman Hon. Jafaru Sani and National Membership Secretary Senator Sadiq Yar’adua.
El-Rufai had helped form the APC in 2013 but decried its shift from progressive roots. He cited ignored warnings over two years as the breaking point. With by-elections now over, he pledged full focus on the new platform.
This bold switch stirs fresh hopes in a state hungry for change, yet echoes old divides that test fragile alliances.
