Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai denied making any statement about which region should produce Nigeria’s president in 2027. He described the viral social media claim as completely untrue in a post on his official X account on Monday. The allegation suggested he said it was the South’s turn and hinted at supporting Labour Party’s 2023 candidate Peter Obi over former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
El-Rufai stressed that he never uttered such words in speeches, interviews, or posts. He maintains verifiable social media accounts where he shares personal views directly. He also warned against attributing opinion articles by others to him, even if he shares them for discussion.
The ex-governor criticised the spread of fake news and urged verification before sharing information. “In this age of turmoil and falsehood, the obligation to verify information before posting or publishing has become more important than ever,” he stated. He lamented how some senior editors overlooked this duty, aligning with irresponsible actors in spreading fiction.
El-Rufai called on everyone to uphold responsibility amid deliberate misuse of social media. He reiterated that no views should be linked to him unless expressed explicitly on his official platforms or in interviews with reputable outlets. The clarification aims to curb misinformation as political talks heat up ahead of future elections.
