The minister overseeing Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory has reaffirmed his unwavering loyalty to the president, vowing to stand by him until 2031 and scoffing at suggestions that he harbours ambitions for the top job in 2027.
In a sharp rebuke shared on Saturday, aides to Nyesom Wike labelled reports of pressure from opposition figures to run for the presidency as utter nonsense cooked up by idle troublemakers with no stake in the nation’s progress.
The claims stemmed from an online story alleging a gathering of party elders from the south pushing Wike to challenge for the leadership role next time around. But spokesmen for the minister slammed it as a clumsy ploy to stir up needless drama through deceit and arm-twisting.
They pointed out that the only real get-together on 20 August 2025 brought together voices from southern chapters of the opposition group to challenge a planned session in Lagos the following day. That Lagos meeting had aimed to narrow down key party roles set aside for the southern region.
The true outcome of the southern huddle came out in a clear public note called ‘Re: Purported Meeting Of PDP Southern Zoning Consultative Summit’. It carried signatures from several regional party heads, including Austin Nwachukwu from Imo, Abraham Amah from Abia, Barr. Venatuis Ikem from Cross River, and Rt. Hon Aniekan Akpan from Akwa Ibom, along with Aaron Chukwuemeka from Rivers.
Other backers included Hon. Chidiebere Egwu Goodluck, the national vice chair for the south-east; Hon O. K. Chinda, the minority leader in the lower house of parliament; senators like Igwe Nwagu, Mao Ohuabunwa, George Sekibo, and Mike Ama Nnachi; Rt. Hon. Onwe S. Onwe, a former national scribe; Barr. Okechukwu Osuoha, deputy national legal adviser; and Barr. Mudi Erhenede, a past legal head in Ebonyi State.
Wike’s team accused the rumour-mongers of twisting names from this honest statement to spin a false tale of a presidential drive, calling it a childish stunt from folks desperate for attention.
A close aide handling public outreach and online matters for Wike described the minister as a straight shooter who always matches words with deeds and shuns shadowy dealings. “He has laid it out plain: from today right through to 2031, he is all in on the president’s path,” the aide declared.
This comes as Wike doubles down on his role in carrying out the administration’s core promises, especially by rolling out major upgrades in the capital to match world-class standards. He plans to keep pushing these efforts to lock in the leader’s second term and build a city that holds its own on the global stage.
