Federal Government and ASUU Begin Talks on 40% Salary Increase

The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities started negotiations on a proposed 40% salary hike for university lecturers on Monday in Abuja. The meeting followed a meeting between ASUU President Prof Emmanuel Osodeke and Education Minister Dr Tunji Alausa last week. Officials aim to resolve long-standing disputes and prevent a nationwide strike.

Osodeke led the union team, which included branch chairmen from various universities. They met with a government delegation headed by Alausa. The talks focused on the pay rise, unpaid allowances, and revitalisation funds under the 2009 agreement.

The minister described the session as frank and productive. He said both sides agreed to reconvene soon to iron out details. Alausa stressed the president’s commitment to keeping students in school without disruptions.

ASUU has warned of industrial action if demands remain unmet. The union cited economic hardships and delayed payments as key grievances. Lecturers seek fair wages to match rising living costs.
