The Federal High Court in Abuja has set December 8 for the hearing of a motion by IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, seeking to be transferred from the Sokoto Correctional Facility.
Kanu, who was sentenced to life imprisonment on November 20, 2025, had asked to move closer to Abuja to exercise his right of appeal, citing the distance and difficulty in accessing the court registry and his legal team.
At Thursday’s proceedings, Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel, attempted to represent him but was denied by Justice James Omotosho, who stressed that only a qualified lawyer can move such motions. Emmanuel was advised to engage a lawyer or seek assistance from the Legal Aid Council.
Kanu’s motion, filed ex parte, requests that the court consider it moved in his absence and that he be transferred to a facility near Abuja, such as Suleja or Keffi, to prepare his appeal. The motion argues that his current detention over 700 km from Abuja hampers his constitutional right to appeal.
Justice Omotosho also clarified that Kanu’s presence is not required to compile his record of appeal, countering claims by one of his former lawyers.
The court adjourned the matter to December 8 for hearing.
