The Federal Government has filed a defamation suit against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan over statements deemed damaging to the reputations of Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello.
The suit, filed at the FCT High Court on May 16, accuses the senator of making “harmful imputations” during a live television interview. The government referenced remarks where she alleged that “Akpabio had discussions with Yahaya Bello that night to eliminate me,” and further questioned why her security was withdrawn.
Another count accuses her of suggesting in a phone call that the organs of late Iniubong Umoren were used for Akpabio’s ailing wife, a claim the prosecution says she knew could harm the Senate President’s reputation.
The case cites violations under Sections 391 and 392 of the Penal Code. Senate President Akpabio and ex-Governor Bello are listed as witnesses.
A trial date has yet to be announced.
