The Federal Government says it will work with Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, known as KWAM 1, and Ms. Comfort Emmanson, the Ibom Air passenger recently released from prison, to promote better conduct among travellers.
Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, SAN, explained that both individuals have shown remorse for their actions during separate incidents that disrupted airport and airline operations. He said their roles will be voluntary, unpaid, and aimed at educating the public, similar to community service.
Emmanson was arrested in August after a confrontation on an Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos, where she allegedly refused to switch off her phone before takeoff and verbally lashed out at crew members. She was prosecuted and jailed before Ibom Air withdrew its complaint, leading to her release. The lifetime flight ban imposed on her is also expected to be lifted.
KWAM 1’s case stemmed from an August 5 altercation with airline staff and security officials at Abuja’s airport while trying to board a ValueJet flight. He was accused of bringing a prohibited alcohol flask on board, spilling its contents on personnel, and obstructing the aircraft’s movement on the tarmac.
Following public appeals and their apologies, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has reduced KWAM 1’s flying ban to one month. The same penalty applies to the ValueJet pilot and co-pilot involved in the incident, who will undergo retraining before returning to duty.
Keyamo said involving the pair in awareness campaigns would send a stronger message about acceptable behaviour in aviation.
“It is common practice worldwide for a repentant offender to publicly speak against the conduct they once engaged in,” he noted. “It’s not a political appointment, and it comes with no perks.”
The minister added that airlines and aviation security staff will also receive fresh training on handling passenger disputes and de-escalating tense situations.
