The Federal Government says it is determined to put an end to strikes in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions through better engagement and fulfilment of agreements with academic unions.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, revealed that President Bola Tinubu has ordered that academic disruptions must never happen again.
“The President has directed that not again, ever in this country, will ASUU or any tertiary institution union go on strike,” Alausa said.
He stressed the need for stronger relationships with unions such as ASUU, NASU, and COEASU, while assuring that the government would meet its obligations.
“There has to be a lot of relationship-building… and beyond that, the government demonstrating goodwill,” he added.
On the issue of delayed salaries, the minister explained that lecturers were still being paid regularly but that recent changes in payment platforms caused slight delays.
“After the tertiary institutions left IPPIS for GIFMIS, payments have sometimes been completed around the 8th or 9th of the next month, but salaries are not withheld,” he said.
