FG Warns Nigerians of Rising Cyber-Slavery Scams Targeting Youths in West Africa

The Federal Government has raised alarm over the rising threat of cyber-slavery, warning Nigerians, especially young people, to be wary of fraudulent job offers promising overseas employment.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa revealed that increasing numbers of Nigerian youths are being trafficked abroad under the guise of securing lucrative jobs, particularly in the cryptocurrency sector. Victims, including minors, are reportedly forced into operating cybercrime networks under abusive and coercive conditions.

The ministry cited a recent rescue operation in Accra, Ghana, where Nigerian victims were freed from captivity in a so-called “cyber-scam factory,” underscoring the severity of the exploitation involved.

“These young Nigerians are subjected to inhumane conditions, compelled to engage in online scams targeting unsuspecting victims worldwide,” the ministry stated.

Highlighting the sophistication and scale of these criminal enterprises, the government called for greater vigilance among citizens. Families were urged to thoroughly verify job offers, particularly those involving travel abroad or remote work linked to cryptocurrency, and to report suspicious activities to appropriate authorities.

The ministry also assured that efforts are underway to collaborate with international partners to dismantle trafficking networks and support victims.

“Protecting the welfare and dignity of Nigerians at home and abroad remains a top priority,” Ebienfa added.
