Nigeria’s commander-in-chief, Bola Tinubu, has ushered in a sweeping overhaul of the military’s upper ranks, naming a quartet of seasoned officers to lead the nation’s defence apparatus in the fight against insecurity and the push for stability.

The changes, effective immediately, place General Olufemi Oluyede at the forefront as Chief of Defence Staff, with Major General Waidi Shaibu stepping up as Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke taking the reins as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral Idi Abbas assuming command as Chief of Naval Staff. Major General Emmanuel Undiendeye holds steady in his role as Chief of Defence Intelligence.

Announced on Friday, the appointments follow the untimely passing of the previous army head and aim to inject renewed vigour into operations amid persistent threats from insurgents and bandits. Observers view the lineup as a blend of frontline grit and strategic nous, poised to sharpen the armed forces’ edge in a volatile landscape.

General Olufemi Oluyede, born in 1968 in Ikere, Ekiti State, emerges as the new Chief of Defence Staff, succeeding General Christopher Musa. A product of the Nigerian Defence Academy’s 39th Regular Course, Oluyede brings a reputation for iron discipline and quiet assurance. His career highlights include leading the Infantry Corps from Jaji in Kaduna State and serving briefly as acting Chief of Army Staff after the demise of Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja. Senators endorsed his permanent army leadership role in December last year, praising his tactical prowess and unflappable style.

Major General Waidi Shaibu, hailing from Nasarawa State, now helms the army as Chief of Army Staff. Renowned for his bold oversight of anti-terror drives in the north-east, Shaibu masterminded Operation Hadin Kai as theatre commander, crippling Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province cells. Hundreds of fighters and their kin laid down arms under his watch, crediting his blend of relentless pursuit and humane outreach. Earlier, as head of the 7th Division in Maiduguri, he spearheaded advances in quelling uprisings and aiding displaced communities.

Air Vice Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke steps into the Chief of Air Staff position, bringing over 4,300 hours in the cockpit from his Benue State roots, though tied to Udi in Enugu. From the academy’s 40th intake, Aneke boasts degrees from the University of Calabar, Ahmadu Bello University, and the University of Abuja, plus a master’s in strategic studies from the United States Air War College. His tenure has spanned logistics mastery, aerial oversight, and safety protocols, piloting crafts from Dornier 228s to Gulfstream jets. Most recently, he guided the Nigerian Defence Academy as deputy commandant.

Rear Admiral Idi Abbas, a Kano native, assumes duties as Chief of Naval Staff, armed with decades of sea and shore expertise. His prior stints as operations director at naval HQ and head of safety and standards underscore a career bridging tactical patrols and administrative rigour.

Major General Emmanuel Undiendeye remains steadfast as Chief of Defence Intelligence, drawing from his Cross River State origins in Bedia, Obudu. A veteran of security probes and peacekeeping, he once led the Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Centre, excelling in threat assessments and cross-border harmony.

These picks signal Tinubu’s intent to fortify the military’s core, blending battle-tested leaders with administrative sharp minds to confront Nigeria’s security quagmire. As the new guard settles in, hopes run high for bolder strikes against threats and a surer grip on the nation’s frontiers.
