Nigeria’s National Universities Commission has given the green light for the Federal University of Agriculture in Abeokuta, Ogun State, to bring back several management-related degrees that were paused years ago.
The decision follows a thorough check by commission experts who visited the campus recently to review the planned programmes. University officials shared the good news in a public update, noting that the formal nod came in an official letter dated 17 October.
The university first rolled out these courses in 2017 but had to halt them a year later. This stemmed from instructions by the education minister at the time, who wanted specialist schools like this one to stick closely to their main focus on farming and related fields, steering clear of broader business topics.
To fit better with its goals, the university’s leaders renamed the management college in 2021, calling it the College of Entrepreneurial and Development Studies. This change aimed to blend business skills with ideas for starting ventures and boosting local growth. The college houses departments in accounting, banking and finance, business management, economics, and entrepreneurship, all of which already hold full recognition from the commission.
The fresh approvals cover undergraduate degrees in accounting, banking and finance, business administration, and economics. On top of that, a new master’s programme in agroecology joins the list.
University spokespeople described the move as a big step forward in expanding what students can study there. It means the school can now welcome new pupils into these fields starting with the 2025/2026 school year.
Back in 2021, student leaders at the university had pushed hard for the courses to return, saying they made farming studies more exciting by adding real-world business know-how. They argued that mixing management with agriculture is common around the world and does not pull focus from the school’s core work.
One student representative at the time explained that bringing back the college was urgent, as it would help make agricultural training more practical and appealing to young people. He added that such a setup strengthens the university’s role without weakening its main mission.
This latest approval opens fresh doors for those keen on blending business smarts with farming know-how, helping to build a stronger workforce for Nigeria’s economy.
