India Appoints Senior Diplomat Abhishek Singh as New High Commissioner to Nigeria

India has appointed experienced diplomat Abhishek Singh as its new High Commissioner to Nigeria. The announcement came from India’s Ministry of External Affairs on September 11, 2025. Singh, who joined the Indian Foreign Service in 2003, currently serves as Joint Secretary in the ministry and will take up his new position in Abuja shortly.

Singh brings more than twenty years of diplomatic experience to the role. His previous assignments include serving as India’s Ambassador to Venezuela from 2020 to 2023 and working as Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Kabul. He has also handled important international matters at India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, where he worked on peacekeeping operations, counter-terrorism efforts, and political affairs.

Nigeria represents an important strategic partnership for India as Africa’s largest economy. The two countries maintain strong relations in several areas including trade, energy, pharmaceuticals, and education. India is one of Nigeria’s largest trading partners, while Nigeria remains a significant supplier of crude oil to India.

The appointment of such an experienced diplomat reflects India’s commitment to strengthening ties with Nigeria and West Africa. Singh’s background in both bilateral and multilateral diplomacy will be valuable in addressing the opportunities and challenges in the relationship. His experience in conflict zones and international organizations will help navigate the complex dynamics of the region.

The new High Commissioner’s responsibilities will include promoting trade and investment between the two countries, supporting the Indian community in Nigeria, and enhancing cooperation in international forums. His appointment comes at a time when both countries are seeking to expand their economic and strategic partnership.

Singh’s previous role as Joint Secretary involved handling important aspects of India’s foreign policy. His move to Nigeria represents a significant assignment in one of India’s most important African partnerships. The Indian community in Nigeria and business stakeholders from both countries are expected to benefit from his extensive diplomatic experience.
