Instagram launched a fresh AI-driven feature on Wednesday that enables users to inspect and modify the algorithm curating their Reels feed. Named “Your Algorithm,” it appears as an icon in the top right of the Reels section and reveals topics the platform infers from viewing habits. Users gain the power to boost or dial down specific subjects, prompting instant shifts in suggestions.
Meta described the update as a bold step in empowering people with clearer oversight of content choices. The company explained in a blog post that as personal passions change, the tool offers smarter ways to shape feeds for deeper engagement with hobbies and connections. It displays a quick list of prime interests and invites custom entries to refine the experience further.
Social networks endure growing calls from watchdogs and audiences for openness on how algorithms sort posts, amid fears of silos that amplify biases or toxic material. Tech firms guard these systems as core to keeping audiences hooked, yet Instagram now leads by example in sharing access. Plans call for widening the option to the Explore tab and beyond soon.
The rollout started in the United States on Wednesday, with a global English-language debut to follow shortly. This comes as Australia imposed a groundbreaking ban on under-16s using major apps like Instagram, seeking to wrest power from digital behemoths and shield youth from manipulative feeds.
