In a strategic move to ensure vulnerable residents benefit from the Federal Government’s cash support programme, Lagos State has accelerated efforts to verify household identities by linking them with their National Identification Numbers (NIN).
The integration process is part of a broader plan to update the Lagos State Social Register, a database of low-income households eligible for government assistance. Officials say the update is key to unlocking federal disbursement of a ₦75,000 relief package aimed at easing the impact of rising living costs.
So far, the state has confirmed that more than 130,000 households have completed the required verification. The operation spans all local councils and is being carried out with support from grassroots teams tasked with reaching underserved communities.
“The verification is critical,” a senior state official explained. “It ensures that support goes to the right people, especially those hardest hit by recent economic adjustments.”
The process comes amid a national push to streamline social benefits through technology, with identity verification now a prerequisite for federal cash transfers. Lagos, being one of Nigeria’s most populous states, is under pressure to lead by example in making the system work efficiently.
The updated register will form a subset of the national database, positioning Lagos to benefit more directly from federally funded welfare schemes.
