Former Nigerian football captain Mikel Obi has strongly criticised the Nigeria Football Federation following the national team’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. The Super Eagles will miss the tournament after a disappointing qualifying campaign that ended with a draw against South Africa.
Mikel expressed his frustration with how the NFF has managed the national team, stating that poor planning and inadequate support for players contributed to the qualification failure. He highlighted the need for better organisation and preparation for future tournaments.
The former Chelsea midfielder questioned why Nigeria, with its wealth of football talent, continues to struggle in international competitions. He pointed out that other African nations with fewer resources have managed to build successful teams through proper planning and investment in football development.
Mikel also addressed the recent appointment of former international player Emmanuel Amuneke as the new head coach. While supporting the choice of a Nigerian coach, he emphasised that Amuneke would need proper support and resources to succeed in the role.
The former captain called for urgent reforms in Nigerian football administration, stressing that the current system needs significant improvement to help the national team compete effectively at the highest level. He warned that without changes, Nigeria risks falling further behind other football nations.
Mikel’s comments come as Nigerian football fans express widespread disappointment with the team’s performance. Many supporters had hoped the Super Eagles would qualify for the World Cup after reaching the final of the recent Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
The NFF has not yet responded to Mikel’s criticism. The football body faces increasing pressure to address the issues affecting the national team and implement changes before the next qualifying campaign begins.
