The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has destroyed a substantial quantity of illicit pharmaceuticals and other products with an estimated street value of fifteen billion naira. The public destruction was conducted at a designated site in Ibadan, Oyo State, to permanently prevent the hazardous items from re-entering the market .
Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of the agency, stated that the operation underscores the organization’s resolute commitment to safeguarding public health. The destroyed items encompassed a wide range of dangerous goods, including counterfeit, expired, substandard, and unregistered medications . Specific products cited were Analgin, Cocodamol, codeine-based cough syrups, Tramadol, Oxytocin, and various expired vaccines .
The agency’s leadership confirmed that the elimination of these products entirely eliminates the risk of their reintroduction into circulation, thereby protecting consumers from severe health hazards . Professor Adeyeye, represented at the event by Dr. Martins Iluyomade, Director of Investigation and Enforcement, expressed gratitude to various security and regulatory bodies for their collaborative support in this endeavour .
Officials also urged the public to remain vigilant and avoid patronizing unauthorized medicine dealers. Stakeholders, including community leaders and healthcare professionals, were called upon to help educate citizens about the dangers of substandard and falsified products . A representative from the Nigerian Customs Service, which provided several seized containers of prohibited items for the destruction, affirmed the continued synergy between agencies in combating this national issue .
