The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested Bariu Aliu, the traditional chief priest of the Igunuko Shrine in the Alpha Beach area of Ajah, Lagos State, for drug trafficking.
NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi confirmed the arrest on Sunday, revealing that Aliu, also known as “Malo,” was apprehended after a three-month manhunt.
His arrest follows the discovery of 2,760 kilograms of skunk at his shrine on October 25, 2024.
Although two of Aliu’s accomplices were arrested and convicted last year, investigations identified him as the leader of the drug syndicate operating from the shrine.
In a separate operation, NDLEA operatives seized 2,217.6 kilograms of skunk concealed in a 40-foot trailer during an intelligence-led raid in the Kagini area of Kubwa, Abuja.
The bust, conducted at 1:20 a.m. on January 11, 2025, also led to the confiscation of six vehicles and the arrest of 42-year-old suspect Isaac Monday Desmond.
The consignment, originating from Uzebba in Edo State, was reportedly destined for distribution in northern states.
Additionally, NDLEA officers in Lagos intercepted 20 wraps of cocaine weighing 330 grams hidden in face cream containers.
The package, intended for shipment to Australia, was uncovered at a logistics company.
