In a fresh crackdown on drug smuggling, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has uncovered cannabis cleverly disguised as snack items at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport and seized massive quantities of opioids and codeine-laced syrups from seaports in Lagos and Rivers State.
The seizure at the airport involved parcels camouflaged as plantain chips but filled with cannabis, commonly referred to as “skunk.” According to the agency, officers intercepted the consignment through routine surveillance and profiling.
“Officers discovered the drugs neatly packed in snack wrappers during inspection,” NDLEA’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, revealed in a social media post, warning travellers against unknowingly conveying contraband items.
The agency urged the public to remain alert and avoid handling unfamiliar parcels during travel.
