Senator Ned Nwoko has proposed the creation of ranches across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas and the Federal Capital Territory as part of efforts to modernise livestock farming and boost food security.

The Delta North senator said the idea is contained in a bill before the Senate, which seeks to establish a legal framework for ranch development and management nationwide.

According to Nwoko, the legislation would introduce state-level approvals for land allocation, ensure environmental sustainability, and promote public-private partnerships in funding livestock projects.

The bill also recommends setting up a Ranch Management and Development Agency to oversee regulations, enforce compliance, and mediate disputes that may arise from ranching activities.

“This framework will help reduce farmer-herder conflicts, protect land rights, and promote sustainable livestock practices,” Nwoko explained.

Key provisions of the bill include veterinary oversight for animal health, compensation for communities whose lands are acquired, and incentives to encourage private sector participation.

Nwoko, who also chairs the Senate Committee on Reparations and Repatriation, said the proposed law would “create jobs, enhance food production, and strengthen cooperation among federal, state, and local governments in livestock management.”
