The Federal Government confirmed precision airstrikes carried out by the United States on terrorist targets in Nigeria’s North West region. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on Friday, highlighting ongoing intelligence sharing and strategic coordination with the US as part of structured security cooperation. These efforts align with international law, respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty, and shared commitments to combat terrorism.
Officials described the collaboration as leading to effective hits on terrorist locations through joint intelligence and support. The government reiterated that all counter-terrorism operations prioritise protecting civilian lives, promoting national unity, and upholding rights for all citizens regardless of faith or ethnicity. Terrorist violence against any community remains unacceptable, the statement added.
US President Donald Trump announced the strikes on Thursday via Truth Social, stating American forces targeted Islamic State militants in the North West who primarily killed innocent Christians. He warned of further action if such attacks continued and wished a Merry Christmas, including to the affected terrorists.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth expressed gratitude for Nigerian cooperation, noting readiness for more operations. The strikes followed a suspected suicide bombing at a mosque in Maiduguri that killed five people the previous day.
Nigeria pledged to continue partnering through diplomatic and security channels to dismantle terrorist networks and prevent threats. As communities mourn losses from persistent violence, this joint action underscores international resolve to restore peace and security for vulnerable populations.
