Nigeria has formally endorsed China’s newly launched Global Governance Initiative, describing it as a timely and thoughtful contribution to strengthening the international system. The Federal Government expressed appreciation to China for unveiling the initiative during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Plus meeting held in Tianjin on September 1, 2025.
The GDI builds upon China’s previous international frameworks including the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, and Global Civilization Initiative. It seeks to address critical global governance issues such as broader representation, adherence to international law, and more effective strategies for tackling climate change, digital inequality, and emerging technologies.
Nigeria particularly welcomed the initiative’s emphasis on five foundational principles: sovereign equality, rule of law, multilateralism, people-centred governance, and results-oriented action. As one of Africa’s largest economies and an active participant in multilateral diplomacy, Nigeria views the GDI as a valuable platform for advancing shared priorities including reform of the United Nations and inclusive governance in emerging domains such as artificial intelligence.
The initiative addresses significant deficits in the current global governance system, including the serious underrepresentation of the Global South. It aims to boost the representation of emerging markets and developing countries while redressing historical injustices. Nigeria reaffirmed its enduring commitment to a more just, inclusive, and effective international order that reflects the aspirations of all peoples.
The government emphasised that the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s national development goals, its principle of strategic autonomy, and the African Union’s Agenda 2063. Nigeria remains committed to working collaboratively with partners across the Global South to foster consensus and strengthen regional cooperation.
This endorsement reinforces Nigeria’s role as a key player in global diplomacy and highlights the growing strategic partnership between Nigeria and China. Both countries aim to create a more balanced and representative global governance system through this initiative.
