Nigeria Moves to Tackle Financial Strain at Foreign Missions

Nigeria’s foreign missions have been struggling to meet their obligations due to tight funding and exchange rate changes, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa admitted that some embassies are behind on rent, salaries, and allowances but assured that the government is stepping in. “The ministry is aware of the challenges and measures have been approved to ease the situation,” he said.

The ministry explained that President Bola Tinubu has released special intervention funds, focusing first on staff salaries, service providers, and overdue allowances. A committee is also verifying debt claims to ensure proper use of funds.

Officials say the financial crunch reflects Nigeria’s wider economic situation but insisted it is temporary. “We are confident these issues will be resolved soon,” the ministry added, stressing that diplomats’ welfare remains a priority.
